The National Association
for Gifted Children (NAGC) offers its members, and the education community
in general, a wide variety of service publications that share valuable information
about gifted education, parenting, guidance and counseling, curriculum,
advocacy, and program development. Gifted Child Quarterly (GCQ) and Parenting
for High Potential (PHP) are the most widely known NAGC publications. In addition
to journals, magazines, and newsletters, NAGC also publishes books, research
monographs, handbooks, guidebooks, and brochures.
The NAGC Publication
Committee coordinates the solicitation, review, and publication of materials
deemed relevant and timely for parents, teachers, administrators, counselors,
psychologists, and university personnel. Each year, the Publications Committee
identifies target areas for service publications on the basis of current
archives and needs in the field.
Although NAGC will publish
a list of these target areas, the list does not restrict open, unsolicited
proposals. We invite you to consider publishing your research, ideas, strategies,
and practices with NAGC. Your contribution will benefit children and foster
a stimulating and supportive learning environment. Your publication will
reach a wide audience and your work will receive prompt attention and careful
consideration. In many cases authors will also receive a stipend or royalties
for their work.
Before the Publications
Committee can consider publishing a book, monograph, or pamphlet suggested
by an author, they must first review a prospectus that contains the following
information:
- The proposed title of the book, monograph, handbook, or brochure
- The name, title, affiliation, address, telephone, and e-mail address
of each author
- A brief statement of the book's purpose and its benefit to NAGC members
- The intended audience for the book, monograph, handbook, or brochure
- The anticipated date of completion
- The anticipated length of the book, monograph, or brochure
- A list of the major headings or titles
- A sample chapter or section of the book or monograph
- A list of other books, articles, or monographs published by the lead
author
Although the Chair of
the Publications Committee will gladly answer questions about the submission
process, neither NAGC nor the Publications Committee can make any commitment
or decision about publication until the prospectus is received and reviewed
by a subgroup of the committee. Once received, the Chair will review the
prospectus and share it with a small group of committee and Association
members best qualified to evaluate its merits. The review process normally
takes about six weeks, and entails the use of a publications
rubric and/or NAGC's Pre-K-Grade
12 Gifted Program Standards, depending on the nature of the submission.
You may find it valuable to review the publications rubric as you develop
your perspective and sample chapter.
The Chair will inform
you of the committee's recommendations as soon as possible. If your prospectus
is accepted, the Chair will appoint a development editor who will serve
as your primary contact as you draft and write your book, monograph, or
brochure. When it appears that work is progressing well, NAGC will contact
you regarding contract terms and publishing rights.
